Tsavo West National Park - Kenya

Travel To Kenya Renowned Tsavo West ParkLike Tsavo East the Tsavo West is the continuity of among the largest national parks in the world with large game sanctuaries in Kenya. The park is located on south eastern Kenya, 240 km from Nairobi along the western side of Mombasa-Nairobi highway and covers 20, 812 square kilometers with less area comparing to its counterpart Tsavo East but frequently visited. The savannah ecosystem comprises of open grasslands, scrublands, and Acacia woodlands, belts of riverine vegetation and rocky ridges.

There are only two permanent rivers in this vast area, the Tsavo, which begins its life on Mount Kilimanjaro and is greatly supplemented by a huge underground river flowing from Mzima Springs and the Athi in Tsavo East, which begins near Nairobi. Tsavo West has more than 2000 kilometers of well maintained, all weather, roads.

Major wildlife attractions include elephant, rhino, Hippos, lions, cheetah, leopards, Buffalos, diverse plant and bird species including the threatened corncrake and near threatened Basra Reed Warbler.

Tsavo West National Park's landscape is dominated, especially off the hills by the giant baobab, a tree that is reputed to live a thousand years and holds about 300 liters of water. After the rains, Tsavo West National Park is showered with white and pink ipomea, and the acacia trees are festooned in feathery masses of white and pink blossom.

It is also possible to make an excursion to the Chyulu Hills National Park, which is adjacent to Tsavo West to the northwest. The Chyulu Hills are one of the world's mountain ranges; the volcanic peak was formed only 500 years ago. Tsavo West National Park's must also rank the wonder of Mzima Springs, refill with two hundred and twenty million liters of crystal-clear water every day, from the underground streams stemming from the lava massif known as the Chyulu Hills, 40-50 kilometers away.

It is a breathtaking landscape of rampant ferocity and the vistas to Kilimanjaro are unbeatable. Lake Jipe is in the sout-west corner by the border of Tanzania and idles for haunt bird watchers and boats ride are available for the tour.
